Victoria implant consultation, what the first visit covers

An implant consultation is an assessment, not a sales meeting. We examine the site, take a scan, go through your medical history and tell you whether implants are the right treatment. You leave with a written plan and no obligation attached to it.

  • Examination and imaging in one visit
  • Written plan to take away
  • No obligation to proceed

The assessment

Four things an implant consultation decides

Whether an implant is the right answer at all, how much bone the site has, whether your medical history changes anything, and what the whole thing will cost. Those four questions are what an implant consultation exists to answer, and none of them can be settled over the phone.

The scan does most of the work here, which is why CBCT Imaging is taken at this visit rather than later. It shows bone height and width, the nerve position and the sinus floor, and it is the moment a Dental Bone Graft either enters your plan or does not.

The output is a written plan with the stages, the timeline and each fee on its own line, the format described on Dental Implant Cost.

How it works

An implant consultation, in four parts

  1. Talk before we look

What is bothering you, what you have already been told elsewhere and what you are hoping for. That shapes everything after it.

  2. Examine and scan

Clinical examination of the site and surrounding teeth, then a CBCT scan taken and reviewed on screen with you.

  3. Discuss the options

Implant, bridge, denture or leaving it alone. We say which we would recommend and why, including where an implant is not the answer.

  4. Written plan

Stages, timeline and itemised fees, printed or emailed. Take it away, compare it elsewhere and come back if you want to.

Come prepared

What to bring to an implant consultation

A list of your medications, any recent X-rays from another practice, and rough dates for when each tooth was lost. That last one matters more than people expect, because a socket empty for eight years is a different case from one empty for eight weeks, as explained on Jawbone Bone Loss.

Bring your questions to the implant consultation written down too. Most people forget half of them in the chair. If cost or nerves are the real barrier, say so at this appointment rather than at the end; both have answers, on Implant Financing and Sedation Options respectively.

Common questions

Victoria implant consultation questions, answered

Length, cost, imaging and whether you have to decide anything.

Usually around an hour. That covers the discussion, the examination, the scan and going through the images with you. Rushing it produces a worse plan, so we book the time rather than fitting it between other appointments.
No, and we would rather you did not. You leave with a written plan precisely so you can think about it, discuss it at home and compare it with other quotes. Nothing is booked unless you come back and ask for it to be.
Yes. Imaging is on site, so the scan is taken and reviewed during the appointment rather than being a separate trip. That is what lets us give a real figure instead of a range at the end of the hour.
Then we say so. Bone, gum health, medical history or the state of the neighbouring teeth can all make another treatment the better answer. Telling you that is a more useful outcome than selling you a plan that will disappoint you.
Please do. A second set of ears helps, particularly when the plan runs across several stages and months. Plenty of people bring a partner or an adult child, and it usually leads to better questions.

They walked through the scan on screen with me. First time anyone showed me why the position mattered rather than just quoting.

Came for a second opinion and left with a written plan I could actually compare against the first one.

They recommended a bridge instead of an implant for my case. Odd to be talked out of the bigger treatment.

Glad I brought someone. She remembered the questions I forgot and the answers I did not take in.
