How long do dental implants last in Victoria?

Asking how long dental implants last is really two questions. The titanium post is designed to stay for decades and frequently does. The crown on top is a wearing part with a service life much like any other restoration.

  • Post and crown assessed separately
  • Service life, not failure
  • Cleaning affects it most

Two answers

Why dental implants last in two different ways

Once a post has integrated it is behaving like part of the jaw, and integration failures overwhelmingly happen in the first months rather than years later. Dental implants last: posts placed decades ago are still in service. What ends a post early is almost always bone loss driven by inflammation, not the metal giving way.

The crown is different. It takes the chewing, the staining and the grinding, and after ten to fifteen years it commonly needs replacing. That is a service life rather than a failure, and it is a much smaller job than the original treatment because the post stays. The crown itself is covered on Implant Crown.

What shortens both is the same list: plaque at the gum line, smoking and untreated grinding, set out on Implant Risks and prevented by the routine on Caring For Implants.

What decides it

What decides whether dental implants last

  1. Daily cleaning

The largest single factor by a distance. Inflammation at the gum junction is what costs people their implants.

  2. Smoking

Reduces blood supply to the tissue around the post, raising both early failure and long term bone loss.

  3. Grinding

Mechanical rather than biological. Overloads the restoration and shortens crown life. A night guard largely handles it.

  4. Regular reviews

Early inflammation is invisible to you and easy to treat. Missed recalls are the common thread in late problems.

Honest numbers

What implant lifespan figures do not say

Published survival rates for well maintained implants are high over ten years, and anyone quoting you a single percentage without conditions is oversimplifying. Those figures come from patients who attended reviews and cleaned properly. A smoker who skips recalls is not the same population, and neither statistic tells you about your own case.

What is fair to say is that dental implants last well and failure is uncommon, that it concentrates in the first year, and that most of what happens after that is within your control. Where a post is lost, the site usually heals and a second attempt is often possible. The full risk picture is on Implant Risks, day to day reality on Living With Implants, and the comparison with a bridge that will also need replacing on Implants Vs Bridge.

Common questions

Victoria implant lifespan questions, answered

Warranties, replacement, and what happens if one fails.

The post often does, and many have been in place for thirty years and more. The crown will not; expect to replace it at some point. Anyone promising a lifetime for the whole restoration is describing the post and quietly leaving out the part that wears.
Component manufacturers warrant the parts, and practices vary in what they offer on the work. Ask specifically what is covered, for how long, and whether it depends on attending reviews, because that condition is common and reasonable. Get the answer in writing with the plan.
It is usually removed, the site allowed to heal for a few months, and a replacement considered once we understand why the first did not hold. Sometimes grafting is needed before the second attempt. It is a setback rather than the end of the option.
No, considerably less, because the surgical stage does not repeat. You are paying for a new crown and the appointments to fit it, not for another post and another integration period. That is one of the quiet advantages of the post staying put.
Clean the gum junction daily, keep your recall appointments, wear a night guard if you grind, and do not smoke. That list is short, unglamorous and accounts for most of the difference between implants that last decades and implants that do not.

Old crown chipped after years. New one made onto the same post, far less work than I feared.

Every six month recall kept. No issues at all so far and I know why.

I grind, so they made a guard with the crown. Protecting it from day one made sense.

They gave me real numbers with conditions attached rather than a headline percentage.
