Remove the tooth gently
Preserving the socket walls during removal matters as much as the graft. Sectioning a root often protects the bone better than forcing it.
Fill and cover
Graft material goes into the socket and is protected with a membrane or a small plug, then the gum is closed over it.
Heal, then reassess
Four to six months, then a scan shows what you have kept and whether the site takes a post directly.

Socket preservation is not always necessary
