Victoria dental implant process, scan to final crown

The implant process is a sequence, not an appointment. Four stages run across three to six months for a simple case, longer where bone has to be built first. Knowing the order makes the waiting far easier to sit with.

  • Four stages, in order
  • Realistic timings, not best case
  • Grafting cases explained separately

The sequence

The implant process: assess, place, wait, restore

The assessment settles whether treatment is possible and what it costs, and it is the only stage where the answer might be no. Placement is the short part, usually under an hour for one post. Then the long stretch: months while bone grows onto the post, during which nothing appears to be happening and everything is. Finally the tooth is made and fitted.

The assessment is covered on Implant Consultation and the imaging behind it on CBCT Imaging. The surgery itself, and what a guide does during it, is on Guided Implant Surgery.

Where bone has to be built first, the implant process gains a grafting stage before placement and adds four to nine months.

The four stages

What each stage of the implant process involves

  1. Assessment

One appointment. Examination, CBCT scan, medical history and a written plan. This is where grafting enters the picture or does not.

  2. Placement

One appointment, usually under an hour for a single post. Local anaesthetic, sedation optional, temporary tooth fitted.

  3. Integration

Three to six months of waiting with one or two short reviews. Soft food at first, then nothing hard on that side. Nothing visible changes.

  4. Restoration

Two appointments: impression and shade, then fitting the crown and checking the bite. One review afterwards.

The waiting

The long implant process stage nobody warns you about

People brace for the surgery and are surprised by the months the implant process takes afterwards. The gum heals in a fortnight and feels completely normal, while underneath the bone is still slowly bonding to the post. That gap between feeling healed and being healed is why the soft food advice outlasts the discomfort by months.

What that period is really like, week by week, is on Implant Recovery Timeline, and the practical aftercare on Recovery And Aftercare. If your case needs bone first, the extra stage is described on Dental Bone Graft.

Common questions

Victoria dental implant process questions, answered

Total time, number of visits, and what slows a case down.

Three to six months for a straightforward single tooth, measured from placement to the final crown. Add four to nine months if grafting is needed first. Cases involving extractions, healing and then grafting can run past a year, which is worth knowing before you start.
Usually four to six for a simple case: consultation, placement, one or two reviews, impression, fitting. Full arch cases involve more. We give you the number at the consultation so you can plan around work and travel.
Bone. Everything else is scheduling. If the site needs grafting, that is a separate procedure with its own healing before the implant can even be placed. Smoking also slows integration and can extend the waiting stage.
Placing the post at the same appointment as the extraction saves months where the site allows it. Loading the post early with a temporary is possible in selected cases. Neither is available to everyone, and pushing them where the bone is not ready costs more time than it saves.
Usually not where the tooth shows. A temporary is normally fitted so there is no visible gap, particularly important at the front. It is not as strong as the final crown and wants care with hard food, but it looks right and holds the space.

The timeline matched what actually happened almost month for month. Made planning far easier.

Understanding why the waiting stage exists made it much easier to accept than being told to be patient.

Mine ran to eleven months with the grafting. They were upfront about that at the consultation.

Post went in the day the tooth came out, which cut months off the sequence described here.

General timings only take you so far. A scan shows whether your site needs grafting, which is the single thing that decides whether you are looking at four months or twelve.
